Sri Lanka barred

CT Sports: Due to security concerns in Chennai, the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has decided not to feature the Sri Lanka Women's Rugby Team for the second tier of the Asian Sevens Tournament scheduled to be held in India on 20 and 21 February.
The team was expected to fly this morning to participate in the tournament, which will feature five countries: South Korea, Nepal, Guam, Sri Lanka and hosts India.
This decision has been taken keeping in mind the security concerns in Chennai. The organizers of the tournament had informed the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) on Tuesday (16) that they have decided to stop the participation of the Sri Lanka Women's Rugby Team and it was confirmed yesterday that the Sri Lanka Team is out.
Earlier, in 2013 the IPL matches in Chennai also did not feature any Sri Lankan cricketers or Match Officials due to the same reasons.
Due to the poor performances during last year's Asian Women's Rugby Sevens Series, the Sri Lanka team has been demoted to play in the Development Tournament.
The winner of this competition will once again get an opportunity to book a place in the Asian Women's Sevens Series.
The Sri Lanka Team started their training two months ago with the vision of earning back their position in the main Asian tournament.
The SLRFU has spent almost Rs 3 million for the preparation, even having brought down a New Zealand Coach Linda Itunu, but the sudden decision has led Sri Lanka into disarray.
According to S.W. Chang, the Chairman of the Women's Rugby Team, players and officials are very disappointed about the sudden decision of the Indian Rugby Union. "We have already made flight arrangements and were supposed to leave on Thursday morning (18)."
He further said the SLRFU would be writing to Asia Rugby and World Rugby regarding this, because Sri Lanka is one of the favourites to win the tournament. "This is not our fault; otherwise they should have played this tournament in a neutral place where all teams can participate."

“We are not going due to the security concern, I have spoken to the Asia Rugby Football Union (ARFU) and they suggested the winners of the tournament will play in a neutral venue ideally in Bangkok very soon” “I am also trying to get this within the next two weeks, because I know you all had trained and prepared with focus” said Mr. Senavirathne. http://thepapare.com/indian-threat-for- ... mens-team/

Re: Asia Rugby Development Sevens
Thank you for the update, I find this strange and very sad as a state of affairs, and can only assume it is the fear of attacks by Tamil extremists?
If this could have been expected to be an issue (given the cricket situation) then Chennai should not have been chosen as the venue.

The fixtures: they still involve the forcedly withdrawing Sri Lanka, but probably in the same page the new program will appear

And 9 in South Korea 53 - 9 Indonesia.
New teams perhaps lacking a bit of confidence and going for PKs.

According to the latest World Rugby statistics, Indonesia only have 20 registered adult women players in the country, whereas Nepal are not even a member of World Rugby.
Its amazing they are there at all

Guam 26 - 10 South Korea.
Bit of a turn-up, if that result is correct. And curiously there will be a rematch in the Cup Final between these two.
3rd / 4th India Nepal 39-0
Cup Final Guam South Korea 19-24

Re: Asia Rugby Development Sevens
Will there be play off matches between South Korea and Sri Lanka?
Re: Asia Rugby Development Sevens
From ARU website:
"The five-team women’s competition in Chennai was won by South Korea who defeated Guam 24-19 in extra time in a thrilling Cup final. Earlier in the day, Guam defeated South Korea 26 – 10 to secure a spot in the final, but couldn’t repeat their earlier feat. Hosts India defeated Nepal in the 3rd/4th playoff.
However, the women’s qualifier is not so straightforward following the unfortunate withdrawal of Sri Lanka from the Asia Rugby Development Sevens this weekend, which was taken by organisers, in conjunction with Asia Rugby, on safety grounds.
The Asia Rugby Executive Committee will meet to find a solution on how to decide which women’s team will qualify for the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series taking into account Sri Lanka’s absence from the Chennai tournament."
